Mary and Petunia Go to Church

Program Notes
"Once upon a time there was a young girl named Mary whose best
friend in the whole world was actually her pet lamb, whom she called Petunia." That is how my piece, The Probably Untrue Story of Mary (who) Had A Little Lamb, for orchestra and narrator, begins. It is a twenty-six minute work intended for an audience of children.
During the course of this work, Petunia gets lost in the woods. Mary
finds Petunia, but now both are lost, in the dark, in the snow, and they are tired and hungry. When they see a light coming from a cabin they naturally investigate and find that the cabin is owned and occupied by Mary's uncle, Antonio Vivaldi. Well, Uncle Antonio takes them in and a wonderful time is had by all. Mary and Petunia stay with Uncle Antonio for a while.
The work is musically comprised of a series of variations on the tune
"Mary Had a Little Lamb". Each variation acts as a sort of musical
illustration for various plot points in the story.
The scene "Mary and Petunia Go To Church" was cut from the work.
The music written to illustrate that deleted scene is contained herein.
Though there is a long association between the name "Mary" and
lambs and the church, this variation has no religious meaning
whatsoever. It is merely a fun variation on a children's tune. No
meaning beyond that is intended nor should it be interpreted.
